China’s Greatest Inventions

Many of the world’s greatest inventions come from China! You may not realize it but, many of the things you use in everyday life were invented in China.  Even today, China is one of the world’s most economically and technologically advanced countries.  Here are some inventions from China that shaped world history and possibly shape your daily lives:

1.) Paper
China was one of the first countries in the world to make paper.  They were also he ones that contributed to its widespread use.  A man by the name of Cai Lun invented the first batch of paper using fishnets, ropes, and cloth. This innovation allowed for paper to be made and bought more cheaply.  Before this innovation, paper was made using bamboo, shells, or bones.  These materials were too heavy to carry around.

2.) Moveable Type Printing
During the Song Dynasty, a man named Bi Sheng developed a moveable type printing press, making it easier to print writing.  Bi Sheng’s invention spread across the world and was the basis for all later printing presses.

3.) Gunpowder
Unlike many of China’s other great inventions, gunpowder was discovered accidentally.  Gunpowder was made when alchemists were searching for a potion of immortality. Gunpowder spread across the world, changing how people fight in battle forever.

These are just some of the hundreds of inventions that China has created.  These inventions have forever changed history. Until next time, 再见!

Without Chinese ingenuity, we wouldn’t be able to print our homework, take notes in class, etc. It’s almost as if the Chinese inventors were the fathers of modern education. Truly fascinating, keep up the great work!
