Candy, candy, candy! I want candy! It differs from country to country, but some of the best candy comes from China. I remember going to my grandmother’s house, eager to be fed tons of traditional Chinese sweets. Here are some of my favorites:
Dragon’s Beard (龙须糖)
Dragon’s beard, or Chinese cotton candy, is an extremely popular sweet in Eastern Asia. Originating in China, its popularity spread to Japan, Singapore, and Korea. The sugar spun exterior is light, fluffy, and sticks to your fingers. Its appearance is similar to a dragon’s beard, hence the name. Inside, a filling of coconut, peanut, chocolate, or sesame creates a contrast in texture.
White Rabbit Candy (大白兔奶糖)
White Rabbit Candy is regarded to be the most well known candy in China. Its soft, chewy texture is paired with its sweet creamy flavor. Inside the wax wrapper, the candy is protected by edible rice paper. Aside from the original flavor, the company started to manufacture various flavors: strawberry, mango, chocolate, and coffee being some of the few unique options.
Sachima (沙琪玛)
Sachima is absolutely my favorite Chinese sweet. It is made from fluffy strands of fried batter that are compressed together with a sugary syrup. The result? A sweet, soft, slightly crunchy snack that is irresistible. (I would eat five at a time, they are very addicting.) Though essentially consist throughout neighboring provinces, sesame seeds, coconut, and dried fruit can be sprinkled on top.
