Hi everyone! As you may have heard from the buzz going around the world, Disney has finally chosen an actress to portray Mulan in the live-action film of the same name directed by Niki Caro! This honor of being hand-picked from nearly 1,000 candidates goes to the one and only, Liu Yifei (刘亦菲)—a Chinese actress with incredible martial arts skills and fluency in English.
Liu Yifei was born in Wuhan, Hubei, China on August 25th, 1987. Her birth name was An Feng (安风) and was changed to Liu Ximeizi (刘茜美子) after her parents separated when she was only seven years old. She was raised by her mother and lived in Queens from ages ten to fourteen, which explains her skills in the English language. A talented artist, Liu Yifei returned to China to pursue a career in acting and modeling, and graduated from the Performance Institute of Beijing Film Academy in 2006.
Known to her fans as “Fairy Sister” for her graceful looks, Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu, has starred alongside superstars Wang Leehom, Rain, and Kris Wu, just to name a few! In addition to starring in Asian films, Liu Yifei has acted in American movies, such as The Forbidden Kingdom (with Jackie Chan and Jet Li) and Outcast (with Nicolas Cage). She is also starring in the 2018 film Inversion, alongside Samuel L. Jackson.
In addition to her background in acting, Liu Yifei is also a singer, model, and brand ambassador.
The live-action film Mulan is coming out in 2019, over twenty years after the original animation was released. We here at The Daily China are all so eager for it to come out! With her talent and credentials, it’s no wonder Disney chose Liu Yifei to portray the beloved character of Fa Mulan in this long-awaited remake. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
