Phrases to Help You Get Around China!

Midwinter break is about to begin for many kids in the United States. If you are planning to visit China, here are some phrases that can help you start a conversation or help you get around China:

  • 你好! (Nǐ hǎo): This is a phrase that is commonly used. This phrase means “hello.” The phrase is a good way to start a conversation with almost anyone!
  • 你叫什么名字? (Nǐ jiào shénme míngzì): This phrase means “What is your name?” By knowing someone’s name, you can address them better. It is also polite to be addressing them by their name especially if you are asking for a favor.
  • 我叫… (Wǒ jiào): This phrase means “My name is….” This phrase is a good way to introduce yourself to someone else.
  • 请你再说一次  (Qǐng nǐ zàishuō yīcì): When someone is saying something too fast, this phrase is perfect for you. This phrase means “Can you say it again?”
  • 男/女厕所在哪儿?  (Nán/nǚ cè suǒzài nǎ’er): This phrase means “Where is the male/female bathroom?” Using the bathroom is a necessity. If you are going to eat or drink a lot, it is important to remember this phrase.
  • 你会说英文吗? (Nǐ huì shuō yīngwén ma): This phrase means “Do you know how to speak English?” If you ever forget how to say a word, you should ask this phrase. If you are lucky, someone will say yes.
  • 你可不可以帮我一下? (Nǐ kěbù kěyǐ bāng wǒ yīxià): This phrase means “Can you help me?” It is important to ask for help when you aren’t able to do a task. This phrase will come in handy if you need help carrying bags or if you want a stranger to take a picture of your whole family.
  • 我们现在在哪儿? (Wǒmen xiànzài zài nǎ’er): This phrase means “Where are we right now?” If you are ever lost, you should ask this phrase. By knowing where you are, it makes it a lot easier for your parents to find you.
