Police Dogs? More Like Police Geese

Instead of the usual police dogs, Chinese authorities are deploying an elite “gaggle of geese police”. Trust me, it’s a real thing.

According to Zhang Quansheng, a police chief in Xinjiang’s Shawan county, “Geese are known to be extremely vigilant and have excellent hearing.” Additionally, “geese are very brave. They spread their wings and will attack any stranger entering [someone’s] home.”

Still don’t believe me? In June, a gaggle of geese managed to attack a man that was breaking into a police headquarter to steal a motorbike.

Even Patrick Cumins, director of bird conservation at Audubon Connecticut, believes that geese make very excellent “watchdogs”. Geese are extremely territorial, so it is instinct for them to attack any invader. Furthermore, most birds have amazing eyesight!

America probably won’t be converting to police geese anytime soon, but one can only hope!

Wow, great article! I was very surprised to see that geese are used for security. I would never have associated geese with being attackers. Thanks for sharing!

This is very interesting! I wonder what the pros are to using geese rather than dogs, because I know that they’re both brave and helpful, but why geese over dogs?

I didn´t know that geese are extremely vigilant and are excellent at hearing. I should have a pet goose so that way I can prevent thieves from stealing stuff at my house :0

I love this! I had no idea police geese existed, but it definitely makes sense after learning how helpful they can be.
