Tanghulu

Have you guys heard of the tanghulu(糖葫芦)? The tanghulu is basically a traditional Chinese snack, and it mainly consists of sugar. This snack can also be call bingtanghulu(冰糖葫芦) because the word “bing” refers to the sugar on the outside. This traditional Chinese snack is usually seen during the winter. It originated in the northern part of China and has slowly become a very popular Chinese snack. Today, you can find tanghulu just by walking down the streets of Beijing, Shanghai, or Tianjin.

Tanghulu is basically fruit with sugar on the outside. There are several types of tanghulu. The most common type is the one with traditional Chinese hawthorn with hardening sugar coating on the outside. Because hawthorn tastes extremely sour, people tend to replace it with other fruits, such as strawberries, bananas, and grapes. There are also different flavor coating for the tanghulu. Instead of just adding plain white sugar coating, people also add chocolate coating or sesame sprinkle.

This well-known Chinese snack is very simple to make. Here are the steps in making tanghulu:

What you will need:

  • Fruits (as many as you like)
  • 1 cup of water
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • Skewers

Steps:

  1. First, add 1 cup of water inside the pot
  2. Then, add 2 cups of sugar
  3. Next, dissolve the sugar and boil it.
  4. After that, put all the fruits on the skewers
  5. Finally, dip the fruits inside the boiled sugar, and you’re done!

This is a very interesting article!!! Before I read this I had no Idea what Tanghulu is. The article makes the Chinese dessert sound really really good. I thought that Tanghulu had a special kind of ingredient that made it really good but now that I think about it is kind of like a Chinese version of a candy apple. But the ingredients are applicable to other fruits other than just candy apples. What I still am curious about after this article is how does hawthorn taste like where it originally came from and what does Tanghulu taste like with sesame seeds. Overall a very good article that I would recommend to just about everybody.

Very interesting article, Helen! I’ve heard of tanghulu before, but I’ve never had a chance to try it. Reading this article definitely makes me want to try some! It’s so cool how people have started to use chocolate and sesames instead of just sugar. I don’t know what hawthorn is, but it doesn’t sound very appetizing. I would rather reach for the strawberries. Thanks for sharing!

This article was really intriguing! This is the first time I’ve seen tanghulu and it looks delicious. It’s cool how it’s become so popular that you can see it anywhere just by walking down the streets of Beijing, Shanghai, or Tianjin. A very nice article! This is yet another thing to add to my list of things to do when I go to China. This Chinese snack looks really good and appetizing but I have never heard of this snack before. I might ask my parents to make this snack at home because the directions seem very simple. I like articles that expand my knowledge of things in China like this article. keep up the good work!

This is a very interesting article by Helen. I liked the visual descriptions and pictures because they made my mouth water. It looks very good and I appreciate how the recipe was included. Maybe I could make some of my own because it sounds easy. Even though this is very popular in China. I’ve never heard of tanghulu before!

Great article! 糖葫芦 is my favorite street food ever. My mom used to buy this for me all the time when we lived in China. When I went back to Beijing two summers ago, I didn’t find any traditional tanghulu, because the traditional kind is usually sold around the winter times. Luckily, my mom managed to find someone who sold it back here in the U.S., but even though it tastes pretty similar, it doesn’t make me that nostalgic. I’ll definitely try the recipe out if I have time.

Although I barely have the chance to eat tanghulu, I remember being able to savor the strawberry tanghulu. For me, strawberries are already pretty sour, so coating it with sugar definitely adds a bonus to the flavor. Just looking at the picture makes me want to eat it again. I wish we could find them in other parts of China too, instead of just the bigger cities. Great article Helen! I can’t wait to make my own strawberry tanghulu.

This is another type of Chinese delicacy. It is made with sweet, tangy and crisp fruit! The most common fruit used for the dessert is hawthorn, but other fruits such as grapes can also be used. It is commonly served in China during the winter season. I wish I had mine with pineapple, banana, or even cantaloupe!

I’ve never heard or seen Tanghulu before. It has a unique look. It kind of looks like candy apples. Maybe I’ll try it one day. Great article!

    这是一篇很好的文章,糖葫芦是我小时候挺喜欢吃的一个食物,但是长大之后就越来越少见到它的身影,我记得以前糖葫芦是有分很多种的,有很多不同的口味。

Tanghulu is a snack that I stopped eating for a while- traditional ones contain haw fruits, not random fruits, but I guess it’s better with other fruits. I always liked the coating, and the haw fruits weren’t as sweet, but still great. I now crave for one- great article! Keep up the good work.

In my many visits to China, I have never come across this dessert. To be honest, this dessert does not look so appealing. I just have one question: In the picture, why is the tanghulu red? Next time I visit China, I will have to try one of these myself. Great recipe and thanks for sharing.

Very cool article. I’ve heard of and have been able to try tanghulu myself many times before. They can be found in many other places besides China. Tanghulu is kind of like an Asian alternative to candy apples. I’m glad you shared the recipe for this delicious dessert.

These pictures are making me hungry! I think I’ve seen tanghulu before, but I’ve never known the name of the candy or tasted it. It looks like small candied apples on a stick! I’ve had chocolate strawberries before, so I’m wondering how strawberry chocolate tanghulu would taste. Thank you for sharing!

Awesome article! I love to eat 冰糖葫芦 and my parents would always get them for me in Chinatown. I didn’t know that there were different types of 冰糖葫芦 and I think that that’s very interesting. Hopefully, I can go to China to try there version of the 冰糖葫芦.

Very nice article! When I visited China, I see people selling tanghulu all the time. I didn’t know what it was at the time though, so reading your article helped me understand what it was. Just reading your article makes me hungry! Thanks for writing this article.

Wow, that dessert looks really good. I have never seen anything like that in my life, even though I have been learning Chinese for 4 years. I also liked how there were instructions for making it. I want to now try to make it myself after looking at the pictures. I also liked the brief history as to where it was invented.

Great article, Helen! I have never heard of Tanghulu before, but I have learned a lot about what it is after reading this article. I found out that this delicacy is basically sugar-coated fruit, which actually sounds super delicious. I hope I have the chance to try it one day! Thanks for sharing and I can’t wait to read more of your articles!
