Welcome Back to TDC! 欢迎回来!

Hey and welcome back to The Daily China. My name is Cole Pergament, your Editor-in-Chief, and I’m very excited about all of the new articles and topics that we have to share with YOU! I first want to take a moment to summarize what we have accomplished in the past year. TDC was published by the 100,000 Strong Foundation, the Asia Society’s Language Matters Newsletter, and the JerEcho. We have posted 83 amusing and insightful articles, received well over 500 comments, and reached a view count of 6,244+ daily viewers, all in just a few months! Over the summer, Keanna (Editor) attended the Middlebury C.V. Starr School in China for a study abroad experience, which I am sure she will share with all of you.

To begin the year, I thought it would be nice to share some rather comical pieces of news. In late August, China decided to celebrate its stock market upswing in the first half of the year with a Xiamen-commissioned customized multi-million Yuan sculpture of a bull aggressively dominating a bear. The bull signifies strong stocks and a booming market, and the bear simply does the opposite. Nevertheless, the Chinese stock market continues to fall through the beginning of this school year—how ironic.

Last week, the Kunming airport staff had to deal with an unusual situation when an 18 kg live snapping turtle was covertly packed into a passenger’s luggage and checked at the counter. How does this happen?

The phrase of the day is 你皮子痒 (nǐ pí zi yǎng), which means, “You’re looking for punishment.”

 Until next time,

再见!

This was very interesting to read. I can’t believe a turtle was packed into a passenger’s luggage. That is so crazy. It is also very funny that a bull is a symbol of a booming market while China’s stock market continues to fall through the beginning of the year.

This was a very interesting artical. I loved reading about how the turtle was in a passenger’s luggage. It is also funny how they use a bull to represent a bull market while their stock market hasn’t been the best. I found the whole article very amusing.

Recently the stocks in China have been in really bad shape. As a result many individuals faced both economic and social issues. In fact, my Father witnessed a few of his business partners loss close to all their life saving during this economic crisis. All in all, I really enjoy these articles. I encourage you guys to continue reporting on these interesting and amusing fun facts.

What an interesting read! I honestly didn’t even know that the bull signified a booming market, nor did I know that the bear signified the opposite in China. The snapping turtle in the suitcase story was also rather amusing. Although it is a bit late to be commenting on a “Welcome back” article, I just wanted to tell you all to keep up the good work, and that I look forward to reading whatever is to come throughout the year. Welcome back everybody!
