What I Was Asked About During My College Interviews!

As a senior applying to many colleges and awaiting their responses, I have been, of course, very nervous. Over the past couple of weeks, I have had three college alumni interviews. Although the purpose of these interviews is to learn more about the school and the applicant, many get nervous and prepare for them like it is a test. I prepared for all the common and predictable questions like “Why do you want to attend this school?” and “What are you interested in studying?” However I was surprised to hear to questions that they were asking. They were all so curious and fascinated by my ability to speak and understand Chinese. I was being asked questions like “Why did you decide to take Chinese?” “Is it hard?” and “Do you want to continue studying this language in college?” Being able to talk about my interest and experiences in the Chinese program at Jericho High School felt so natural. My accomplishments in the Chinese Program at my school, as well as my participation in the Chinese Honor Society, have really made me stand out from my peers, and it will continue to do so. I am so excited to continue studying Chinese and learning about the Chinese culture next year in college!

With all the fuss about applying to college, it’s nice to hear how Chinese has been a major point of curiosity for interviews. The growth of the importance of the language in America makes Chinese all better to learn. Good luck in college!
