Fried Rice

Background: Chinese fried rice is a meal that people all around the globe enjoy consuming! It is a popular component of Asain cuisine and American Chinese cuisine. This dish is created by typically stir-frying rice in a wok or frying pan. (Check out Naomi Yu’s series of I’ll Wok With Yu if you’re interested in cooking here!) and is mixed with various ingredients including eggs, meat, and vegetables.

History: Fried rice dates back all the way to 589 CE in the Sui dynasty where it is believed to have originated from. It is native to the Yangzhou city. The stir-frying technique gained a lot of popularity in the late Ming dynasty (1368 CE – 1644 CE). However, the technique was recorded much earlier. It was introduced as a way to reuse leftover food. Nowadays people still make fried rice when they desire to get rid of extra meat or vegetables.

It is widely considered to be a comfort food and is also known as a popular street food in many parts of China. Due to the meat, vegetables, eggs, and rice, this meal can be pretty nutritious.

I have a love-hate relationship with fried rice. I enjoy eating fried rice when I haven’t eaten fried rice in a while. My parents make fried rice so much that I sometimes get sick of it. The history of fried rice is very interesting. Thanks for sharing!
